Daniel saw that I was fed, commenting that it wouldn’t do to starve myself for Samuel’s sake. When I parted ways with the other Charlotte brothers I walked back to the doctor’s office. I could hear the shouting even before I opened the door.

“The hell do you even care for?” The voice was Samuel’s, though froggy and raw.

I opened the door, peering down the hallway which bisected the building from the front door to the back. The parlor to my right served as the doctor’s office. Rooms running down the left side served as examination and operating rooms.

“I care because I care, you damnable stubborn ox.” And that was certainly Maddy’s voice. The shouting match was coming from Samuel’s room.

I crept there, glancing in the parlor as I passed—apparently Doctor Thackery had stepped out. A mirror opposite the door to Samuel’s room revealed the truth. They were shouting, but they were close—terribly close. He had her gripped by the cloth of her shoulder and her arms were placed to either side of his neck where he reclined in bed.

“You’re just here for the gold,” I heard him say in a dangerously low voice.

She sniffed indignantly, pulling away from him. “That’s a filthy accusation. I’m here because the cards said I would be here.”

“Fate.” Samuel snorted. “Right. Get out.”

“I will!”

“And don’t come back!”

She drew herself upright, taking the bearing of a queen. “Mister Clayton, if my presence is a thorn in your comfort I will be sure to make myself known to you every last day you draw breath.”

As I neared the open door to the room Maddy came bustling out, skirts hiked up and out of her way. Her face was flustered and her hair out of place. And I noticed the first three buttons of her dress’ high neck were unfastened.

She stopped when she saw me, a fresh red flush coming to her face. Fastening her buttons she stammered for a moment. Finally gathering her composure, Maddy caressed my cheek fondly and said, “You’ve the patience of all the saints for putting up with that…that man.”

I lost my voice at the touch, fumbling for a brief moment. Again she smiled for me and excused herself out of the office. She slammed the door for good measure, hard enough to cause the trim windows on either side of it to rattle in their casings.
